While serving as the new Under Secretary of Commerce and Administrator of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Dr. Jane Lubchenco will be taking a leave of absence from Oregon State University where she has been an environmental scientist and marine ecologist who has been actively engaged in teaching, research, synthesis and communication of scientific knowledge. She grew up in Colorado, received her PhD. and taught at Harvard University, and then 28 years ago moved to Oregon State University where she became the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology.

Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., was confirmed by the U.S. Senate this evening as the under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere. In this capacity, she will serve as the ninth administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the nations top science agency for climate, oceans, and the atmosphere. Dr. Lubchenco is the first woman and the first marine ecologist to lead NOAA.
