Boats

To conduct research on oceanographic conditions of the inner shelf, we needed access to research vessels that were capable of working close to shore.  The small (37’) research vessel RV Sacajawea, operated for OSU researchers by COAS ship operations in Newport, was old, slow, and unsuitable for work under moderate to high seas, so funds to replace her were included as part of the PISCO grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. In August 2000,  the R/V Elakha went into service for PISCO and OSU ocean researchers.  The Elakha is 54 feet in length, travels at about 10 knots, and is a much larger and more stable platform for oceanographic research that was its predecessor.  PISCO has priority in scheduling the Elakha, but its working range limits it to sites for which a round trip can be done in a single day.  Because PISCO-OSU research extends well beyond this range, there was a need for a second, smaller research vessel that could be trailered to remote sites and launched for nearshore oceanographic and ecological (diving) research.  In November, 2002 the RV Kalipi was delivered to Newport.  The Kalipi is a 29' boat and cruises at about 20 knots.
